Speaking at ITARC about the Future of Data Science

Barry O’Reilly invited me to give a tech talk at the ITARC conference in Stockholm on Tue 17th of October 2023. This was my first post-pandemic physical conference and it has reignited my love for speaking.

I was so glad to share my experience so far in switching from data science to software engineering. We went through the evolution of data science, including a sidestep to generative AI, and the new responsibilities the data science role should be taking up and what software engineering skills are involved.

There were incredibly other speakers presenting as well, like Grady Brooch who spoke about ‘the Rise and Fall and Rise of Artificial Intelligence’. It was incredible to see him give a nuanced history of artificial intelligence in only an hour.
Other speakers at the conference were Simon Brown, who is the creator of the c4 model, and Kevlin Henney on technical neglect (and why that’s a better term than ‘technical debt’).
I also really enjoyed the presentation by Magda Wojnarowka-Pietrzak on ‘Architectural Mistakes in Cloud Computing’. She gave very concrete recommendations to very recognisable problems, which is always appreciated.

If you’re interested in what I presented, feel free to reach out. And if you were at ITARC conference: it was absolutely lovely to meet all of you! Thank you for the brilliant questions.
